The DF50 series is a diesel-electric locomotive manufactured to replace steam locomotives on sub-main lines.
It was deployed throughout Japan except Hokkaido and was also used to pull sleeper express trains, but was retired in 1983 due to the increase in the number of DD51 series.

- The headlights are illuminated with incandescent LEDs and have an ON-OFF switch
- Spoke wheels are used
- The coupler uses KD No. 5
- The power terminal is equipped inside the duct on the roof
